Then Moses and the priests, the Levites, spoke to all Israel, saying, “Take heed and listen, O Israel: This day you have become the people of the LORD your God. 10 Therefore you shall obey the voice of the LORD your God, and observe His commandments and His statutes which I command you today.” Deuteronomy 27:9-10 NKJV
God choose the children of Israel to become His people. They were to live differently from the surrounding nations. They were set apart to God. They were to reflect God’s character to others by obeying His voice and observing His statutes and commandments.
They were about to enter “the promised land flowing with milk and honey.” God was about to fulfill His promise to those He loved. God did not want the children of Israel to think this was the end of the journey and become complacent in their new home. Rather He wanted them to remember to listen to Him and observe His ways.
Think for moment about a family with parents and children. The children belong to the parents. They are responsible to listen and obey all their parents say. The parents are responsible for providing for, teaching and correcting the children so they may have healthy, productive lives.
The parents are not responsible for their neighbor’s children. They don’t walk in their neighbor’s house and start instructing their neighbor’s children what to do. The neighbor’s children are not responsible to them, so they have their own parents who they are responsible to. Likewise, our children are not responsible to our neighbor’s parents because we are their parents.
In order for this responsibility to kick in, one must first become part of a family. Some are physically born into a family and others are adopted into a family. Once you’re in a family you become responsible to the parents and their commands.
When we live in family, we start looking and acting alike. Ever notice how the children look much like their parents. Even adopted children who come from different birth parents, start looking and acting like their adoptive parents.
That’s what is going on here in scripture. The children of Israel have become part of God’s family. As a result, they have the responsibility to listen and obey God’s commands and live different from those who are not part of God’s family. The children of Israel’s lives were to show the world around them they were in fact part of God’s family.
How about you? Have you become part of God’s family yet? All you need to do is trust Jesus through faith and God’s grace will activate. If you haven’t done this yet, there’s no time like now. Simply ask Jesus to forgive your rebellion and He will. God will send His Holy Spirit to live in you so you’ll know you are His.
So you are part of God’s family by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Does your life reflect God’s character? Have you stepped up to the responsibility to God and His commands? If not, ask God to show you what and give you a willing heart to change.
God Almighty who loves us and wants us to become part of His family, thank you for making it possible through Jesus Christ. May we accept your work on our behalf. May we become your children and responsible to your voice and commands. Enable us this day to live for you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.” John 4:42 NKJV
Some people believe when they hear other people’s story of how they found Christ. Other people believe after they investigated for them self. But everyone comes to believe when they finally hear Christ for themselves.
God in his infinite grace has given each of us the opportunity and privilege of sharing his word with others. As we share what God has done for us it may very well cause others to believe in God too. Then again it may just be a seed that’s planted for someone else to water.
In Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus gave us His final directive: “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”
We can’t make disciples if we ourselves don’t know God’s Word, can we? No we can’t. Therefore, first we come to God and ask Him to reveal Himself through His word. Next we apply what we’ve learned from His word in our lives. This is what embeds His truth into our belief system. Finally, we begin to share what God has done in our life with others. We build relationships with others and invite them to church or to Bible study or any other God honoring activity. And we pray continually for anyone who hasn’t found the Lord yet (2 Timothy 2:25).
Will anyone be thankful you shared Christ with them?
Lord, we thank you for your word and your Holy Spirit who gives us the courage do what you ask of us. Continue your good work in us until the fullness of Christ is complete. In Jesus name we pray Amen.

“They came to the chief priests and elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great oath that we will eat nothing until we have killed Paul.”” Acts 23:14 NKJV
As I pondered over this verse I thought of rules versus righteousness. There were about forty Jews who took this oath to kill Paul. These men were angry enough to take a pledge to kill someone. But to let anger drive you to make hasty decisions you will regret later is not only foolishness but it is sin. The Bible teaches “in your anger do not sin” (Psalm 4:4 NIV).
According to these Jews the rules had to be followed. Anyone who rejected the rules would be punished. Isn’t that just like man? We make a rule and expect others to follow it. When they don’t, we say they deserve punishment. If God wanted us to follow rules, He wouldn’t have sent His Son, Jesus. For God said, “This is my Son, whom I love and I am well pleased. Listen to Him.” (Matthew 17:5 NIV)
These Jews were so bent on following a rule of taking an oath they were blind to how wrong their planned action was. Paul did nothing worthy of death, yet these men were willing to deny them self food and water until they killed him. Killing someone without cause is wrong. Jesus took this a step further saying even being angry at your brethren without cause puts us in danger of judgment (Matthew 5:22 NKJV).
The thing is we usually think we have a just cause, don’t we? That’s where righteousness comes in. Righteousness defined by Merriam Webster is acting in accord with divine or moral law: free from guilt or sin and morally right or justifiable. The Bible teaches us in Psalm 14:3 NKJV “They have all turned aside, they have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, no, not one”. No one is good, except God. Our righteousness is worthless in His sight. The only righteousness that is worth its weight in gold comes from God Himself. These Jews were not practicing righteousness that comes from God, but what comes from man. If they were following God, I’m sure they would have remembered Exodus 21:14 NKJV “But if a man schemes and kills another man deliberately, take him away from my altar and put him to death.”
Next time anger tries to over take you, stop and ask your self “Why am I angry?”, “Am I trying to get someone to follow my rule?”, “Am I acting in accord with God’s Word?” Submit to the Lord, resist the devil and he will flee from you (James 4:7). God’s righteousness is what we need, not rules.
Lord thank you for your precious word and your Holy Spirit who reveals your truth to us. Thank you for your righteousness that sets us free from rules and brings us into relationship with you. Help us in every way grow into your likeness. In Jesus’ name we pray Amen. © Elizabeth Marks, author of ThinkOnIt Devotions and has a heart for encouraging others with God’s Word. Are you following the truth? God gave us many things to help us discover the truth. Let’s take a look at some of them.
God gave us a brain. He expects us to use it. Isaiah 1:18 NKJV says “Come now, and let us reason together,” says the LORD “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool”. Psalm 34:8 NKJV tells us to taste and see the Lord is good.
God gave us His word. Psalm 68:11 says “The Lord gave the word”. He expects us to study it and discover His truth like the Bereans did in Acts 17:11 NKJV “These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.” In addition, 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV tells us “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
God gave His Son to die for us. Psalm 53:3 NKJV says “Every one of them has turned aside; They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one.” Romans 6:23 NKJV says “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Through one man, Adam, sin entered mankind. Another man, the Son of God, paid the price for our sin so we wouldn’t have to (Romans 5:12-17). John 14:6 NKJV says “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
God gave His Holy Spirit to those who believe in Jesus Christ’s sacrifice for their sins. First Corinthians 2:14 tell us the natural man thinks the things of God are foolishness and he can not know them for they are spiritually discerned. John 16:13 NKJV says “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth.” The Spirit is given so we might know the things that have been given to us freely by God (1 Corinthians 2:12).
So are you ready? Are you ready to use your brain, receive His Word, accept His sacrifice for your sins and receive His Holy Spirit?
Step into God’s glorious truth today. Today is the day of Salvation. If you haven’t received Jesus as your Savior, pray something like this:
Jesus, I believe the Word of God. I now understand I am not saved by my own goodness. Please come into my life and make my sins as white as wool. Give me your Holy Spirit to lead me in all truth. In your name I pray. Amen. © Elizabeth Marks, author of ThinkOnIt Devotions and has a heart for encouraging others with God’s Word. Merriam Webster’s Dictionary says family is a group of individuals living together under one head, coming from the same clan or race, and a people united by certain convictions as in a fellowship.
I want to call your attention to a few words in the above definition.
Individuals are unique. Each has its own personality, style, preferences, and beliefs. God made us this way. He loves variety. Therefore, we are called to live at peace with everyone, as much as it depends on you (Romans 12:18).
One Head represents the One Authority we live under – God. In God’s economy He planned for the husband to be head of the household, just as Jesus Christ is head of the church (Ephesians 5:25). We are to live in submission to God, whether we are married or single.
Same Clan – We are all part of the same human race. We all have the same sinful nature. Realizing we’re all in this life together will help us be more forgiving. We are sinners by nature (Romans 3:23). Even after we are born again in Christ, we may still make mistakes. Let’s cut each other some slack by forgiving and being tender hearted towards one another. After all God has forgiven you, how then can you withhold forgiveness to someone else?
United – We are united together in Christ Jesus. Family is so important to God that He died for us to adopt us into His family (Ephesians 1:5). Jesus is the unifying entity that seals us together as a permanent family.
With the above definition in mind, I’d like to say families are:
- A place where we are loved for who we are not what we do. We are accepted and belong.
- A place of encouragement. It may seem like the world is against us, but we know our family is for us.
- A place to share our troubles without being blamed for them.
Sadly, this ideal isn’t the case a lot of the time. Whether your family meets your expectations or not when you are a believer in Jesus Christ you are automatically adopted into the ideal family. What we have today with out physical family will one day be gone. But our spiritual family will remain together in heaven.
Rather than wasting precious time complaining about the dysfunction we see in our earthly family, let’s try to find common ground and practice loving one another as the Lord loves us.
What are you doing to promote a godly family? Is your love without hypocrisy? Are you kind and affectionate, giving preference to one another? (Romans 12:9-10).
Remember God has a plan and purpose for you being part of your family. He is working in you to grow you to be more Christ-like. In the family setting, conflicts and all, He is developing godly character in us.
Lord, thank you for placing us in earthly families. Help us to grow Christ-like character until you welcome us in heaven. In Jesus’ name Amen.

But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. Acts 9:15 NKJV
Read Acts 9.
God tells Ananias that Saul is His chosen vessel and outlines His purpose for Saul’s life. Saul is to go before the Gentiles, kings and the children of Israel to bear God’s name.
What did Saul do after he received his sight and spent time with the disciples at Damascus? In verse 20 it says he went immediately to preach Christ in the synagogues. In verse 22 is says Saul increased all the more in strength and confounded the Jews. I wonder if Saul was supposed to go to the Jews first. Back in Acts 9:15 God said for him to go to the Gentiles, then kings and then the children of Israel. Perhaps where Saul started was his own choosing and not the Lord’s.
Verses 23-24 says: “Now after many days were past, the Jews plotted to kill him. But their plot became known to Saul. And they watched the gates day and night, to kill him.” To me, this confirms it wasn’t the time to witness to the Jews. But wait, God is so good. His grace shines brightly in verse 25 when the disciples help Saul escape. Next Saul goes to Jerusalem and again his life is threatened, this time by the Hellenists. Again, God’s grace is visible in verse 30 when Saul is able to escape to Caesarea and Tarsus.
This is fascinating to me. Talk about open and closed doors of opportunity. Saul was bursting through every door trying to tell the good news of Christ to the Jews. It seems logical Saul would want to go to the Jews first. After all he was a Jews. But God had a different plan. Sometimes it takes a few failed attempts until we find the right path.
God’s goodness is evident as well in verse 31 when it says: “Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.” This is further confirmation God uses all things for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). Saul may not have been destined to go to the Jews first, but God still used those attempts to edify and multiply the churches.
Reread this section of God’s Word. Keep your eye focused on God’s grace. It’s a beautiful thing. God always makes a way out. He still does for us today. Look at what 1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV says: “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” This was written by Saul, who later became Paul. He knows what he’s talking about.
Lord thank you for calling us for your purpose. May we be quick to listen and follow your direction. And when we fail to go your way first, may your grace bring goodness out of it anyway. In Jesus’ name Amen. © Elizabeth Marks, author of ThinkOnIt Devotions and has a heart for encouraging others with God’s Word. Do you know you can believe the preaching of God’s Word but still be off base? Check out Simon the ex-sorcerer in Acts 8:4-25.
When our desire is for the miracle and not for the Miracle-Maker, rest assured our motives are not right. This guy, Simon, apparently had done some amazing things. The people praised him saying “This man is a great power of God.” But Simon wasn’t of God, he was of self.
Oh how important it is to measure our self against God’s standards, allowing His righteousness to be our plum line. That’s why we study the Bible, to understand God and our self better.
I can relate to Simon. When I was trapped in perfectionism, I did all the “right” and “good” things. People praised me for my high standards, quality of work and reliability. On the inside, my heart craved the people’s attention and approval. I did those things for appear great in their eyes. It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing your own press when there’s no internal compass keeping us centered on the Lord. It happened to Simon and to me before we knew the Lord Jesus Christ.
Unfortunately, we don’t know how Simon’s story ends. But we do know how God radically changed me! The Purpose Driven Life book says, “It’s not about you”. Remembering that is crucial to staying focused on God.
Now when people praise me for good work, I turn it into an opportunity to remind others God deserves the credit. He enables me to do what I do and now I do these things to please Him. You know what? It’s a whole lot more fun working for God that working for my self!
How about you? What motivates you to do a good job? Is it praise or approval from people? Or is it for God’s pleasure?
Learn to live your life for an audience of One. It’s a lot less stressful knowing we don’t have to measure up to our own unrealistic standards.
Lord, thank you for setting us free from the approval of man. Thank you for changing our motives to be pure and right from you. Thank you for leading us on the pathway of your righteousness. In Jesus’ name Amen. © Elizabeth Marks, author of ThinkOnIt Devotions and has a heart for encouraging others with God’s Word. We’ve all had relational conflicts at one point or another, haven’t we? The following list reveals some of the ways conflicts exhibit them self in our relationships:
- A refusal to do or not do something.
- A refusal to sacrifice our desire for someone else’s benefit.
- A refusal to serve one another.
- A refusal to place a high priority on relationships.
- A refusal to see from another’s perspective.
- A refusal to be open, honest and vulnerable.
- A refusal to accept one another.
- A refusal to stick it out until the end.
What do all these statements have in common? They are geared towards self. Selfishness damages relationships, doesn’t it?
What does the Bible teach about each of these things?
- That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; Colossians 1:10 NKJV
- Your [God’s] will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Luke 11:2 NKJV
- For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. Mark 10:45 NKJV
- And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” Genesis 2:18 NKJV
- Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; Romans 12:10 NKJV
- Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. James 5:16 NKJV
- And is kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32 NKJV
- [Love] bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:7 NKJV
Want to remove conflict and create peace in your relationships? Assess how well you’re currently handling your relationships. Do you identify with anything on the first list? Ask God for wisdom and discernment to turn the worldly refusal into a godly response.
This devotional idea came from the fifth chapter called Shalom-Filled Relationships out of the Peace Making Women book. This book provides practical advice, tons of personal examples as well as lots of encouragement to guide us on the path of peace. I highly recommend you buy your own copy at ThinkOnIt Devotions Bookstore.
Lord thank you for your word and wonderful God-centered resources to guide us on the pathways of peace. Enable us to assess our relationships and give us the courage to handle them your way. In Jesus’ name Amen.

A wise man hears and increases learning. Proverbs 1:5 NKJV
What do you think of when you say the word wisdom? Does good judgment come to mind? What about obedience? That’s right obedience. Ever consider how obedience and wisdom go hand and hand? Let’s review Proverbs 1 and 2 and conclude with first two verses of Proverbs 3. Get out your bible and read along with me.
Where does wisdom come from?
According to Proverbs 2:6 it comes from God: For the Lord gives wisdom, from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. Therefore, with our hearts open to God, we ask Him for wisdom. James 1:5 NKJV says “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
How does wisdom work?
Look at Proverbs 2:7-9 and see what the Lord does for those who seek Him, cry out for discernment, apply their heart to understanding and incline their ear to wisdom:
-
He stores up wisdom for us
-
He is our shield
-
He guards the paths of justice
-
He preserves the way of His saints
The benefit of wisdom entering our heart is knowledge pleasant to our soul. Discretion preserves us, understanding will keep us, to deliver us away from evil (Proverbs 2:10-12).
Wisdom tied to Obedience?
Jesus told us to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves in Matthew 10:16. James calls us to be doers of the word (James 1:22). Jesus said in Matthew 7:24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.” But this not just a New Testament teaching, no this goes back to the Old Testament as well. Jeremiah 23:22 says “But if they had stood in My counsel, and had caused My people to hear My words, then they would have turned them from their evil way and from the evil of their doings.”
Wisdom comes when we hear God’s Word and apply His truth in our life. When we actually do what we hear, wisdom is the result. That wisdom guards our life by the power and grace that comes from God alone.
Got Wisdom?
My son, do not forget my law, but let your heart keep my commands; for length of days and long life and peace they will added to you. Proverbs 3:1-2 NKJV.
Lord Jesus, may our hearts be open to Your precious wisdom giving Word. Enable us to not only hear but do what You have told us. In Jesus’ name Amen.

As Peacemaking Women book shared in the Biblical Peacemaking chapter, we are called to unity in Christ through the Spirit of peace. To validate that a review of scripture reveals the following verses on unity and living at peace with others:
- Ephesians 4:1-3 “I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
- Philippians 2:1-3 “Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
- Romans 12:17-19 “Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.”
- Romans 15:5-7 “Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
- 1 Corinthians 1:9-11 “Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.”
But conflict arises for many reasons and upsets this unity, if we allow it. Rather than reacting too quickly in a heated emotional state, we are wise to wait and pray for discernment. Reviewing scripture is a good place to start getting our focus back on God and His will for our lives through the conflict at hand. Seek first to have God point our anything offending in us, so we may confess our sins and remain humble. Only when our sin is dealt with properly will we be able to humbly help others with their sin.
What’s our solution to conflict? As always, it’s found in the Word of God and prayer. Following Jesus and the apostles’ examples of how they handled conflict, their teachings on restoring and forgiving others will show us the right way to approach conflict in our lives.
Lord thank you for your wisdom and guidance through the pages of your blessed Word. Thank you for your Spirit leading on the pathway of righteousness. May we seek to be right with you before attempting to help any one else. In Jesus name Amen.
