Bible Devotions

Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” Luke 1:42 NKJV

Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. We know the Holy Spirit reveals things. The text doesn’t tell us whether Mary explained what happened to her yet.

Therefore, we might assume the Holy Spirit revealed to Elizabeth Mary’s pregnancy. First, Elizabeth uses the same words as the angel did when he greeted Mary. “Blessed are you among women.” Coincidence, I think not. Next Elizabeth says “blessed is the fruit of your womb.” Clearly she knew Mary was pregnant.

The Holy Spirit reveals what God wants known. What is He trying to tell you?

Lord Jesus thank you for your Holy Spirit through His guidance we can know what is to come. In your precious name we pray. Amen.

Mutual Encouragement

Two Women
And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Luke 1:41 NKJV

Up until this point, Elizabeth was probably enthralled with her own miracle pregnancy and prophecy for her child. Then what joy, Mary came. When Elizabeth’s child heard Mary, he leaped inside of Elizabeth’s womb.

The two women rejoiced together no doubt about it. Both with extraordinary tales of God’s loving kindness and both chosen to play important parts in God’s grand plan.

How wonderful of God to bring these women to each other for mutual encouragement.

Lord God Almighty, what a wonderful, caring God you are. You brought these women together to care and comfort one another. You designed us to be in relationship with one another. Thank you for placing us in relationships to encourage one another. In Jesus’ name Amen.

Can’t Wait to See

1080153_hills_of_jerusalem Now Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, to a city of Judah, 40 and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. Luke 1:39-40 NKJV

The angel had departed and now Mary begins her journey.  The first stop is to see with her own eyes whether the angel’s words about Elizabeth, the barren one, being pregnant were really true.

This journey would not be easy.  It says Mary went into the hill country.  Walking for any length of time can be tiring.  Walking many miles and then navigating up hill without the luxury of paved roads and automobiles is entirely more difficult.  When was the last time you walked several miles up hill?

But this journey had to be taken.  The difficulty did not stop Mary.  She had to know.  She probably couldn’t wait to see Elizabeth heavy with child.  For in seeing prophecy of Elizabeth come true, she would know the prophecy about her would also come true.

Self check:  When was the last time you were excited about something God said and you just couldn’t wait to see it come true?

We are Christians who eagerly wait for all of God’s Promises to be fulfilled!

Lord God above, you have promised so many good things for those who believe you.  Help us to hope in you and not waver.  Help us to eagerly await the fulfillment of your word.  In Jesus’ name we pray Amen.

Mary Believed and Accepted

Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. Luke 1:38 NKJV

Mary is no longer troubled by the greeting. She has considered the angel’s message. She is done with questioning. She has been given proof God can do what He says. Her relative Elizabeth who couldn’t have children is now pregnant says the angel.

After taking it all in Mary realizes God is God. He can do all things. If God wants this to happen, she can not stop it or fight it. So how does Mary respond?

She responds in faith and submissive obedience. She responds in proper relation to God Almighty. He is God. She is not. She says in a nutshell “here I am Lord use me.” She accepts her calling to become the mother of God’s Son.

Self check: What is God calling you to? How have you responded?

Lord you came not to be served as you deserve, but rather to serve us who don’t deserve it. You ask us to join you in serving others. May we respond in faith and obedience as Mary did. In Jesus’ name we pray Amen.

Nothings Too Hard

27567781_564683651For with God nothing will be impossible. Luke 1:37 NKJV

God created the whole universe. He spoke and it was so. God created man from the dust of the ground and breathed life into him. God created woman from Adam’s rib. God created in a variety of ways.

Everything in creation is logical. For example when God made trees and bushes, this plant life were to produce seed after their own kind. In this way the plants & trees could repopulated with out help from anyone. Animals and people were designed the same way. Both animals and people need an egg and sperm to produce off-spring. No help is required, just get these elements together and life would be born.

However, Mary story is different. This time God created a baby without the man’s sperm, inside a virgin girl’s womb. He chose to make a baby with only one element, the egg. This is humanly impossible. There is no way a woman, no matter how hard she tries can make herself pregnant, for it takes two.

In Elizabeth’s case, there were several human possibilities preventing her from child birth. We don’t know for sure why she never had children. But one thing for sure, she was past the child-bearing years. She was old. At a certain age the body stops producing eggs. As we discussed above, without an egg there’s no pregnancy. He husband’s age also played a role. So again, this is another humanly impossible situation. But it’s not the first time God caused an old woman to conceive. Remember Sarah and Abraham? They were in their 80s and 90s when Isaac was born.

So in conclusion, let me leave you with two thoughts. The first is this, we are dependent on God. If miracles are to happen, it won’t be our doing, but God’s. (So for the perfectionists out there, stop trying so hard!)

The second thought is God can do anything. There is nothing too hard for Him. If He wants to become a human child born to a virgin girl without the aid of sperm – He can do it. If He wants aged women to give birth well after menopause – He can do it. He is God. He is the same God who spoke the world into existence.

Self check: Is there anything you think God can not do?

Lord God All Powerful, you can do all things. Your word tells us we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Let our faith in you be as strong as you are powerful. In Jesus’ name Amen.

Personal God

21165661_99910626Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. Luke 1:36 NKJV

So Mary has just been told she’s going to have a baby. Not just an ordinary baby, but the supernatural conception of the Son of God! That might set your mind reeling.

Imagine being the only one. God had never done anything like this before. Oh sure, He parted the Red Sea, gave victories to Israelites and healed people. But nothing as personal and intimate as this was done before!

As Mary thought about it, I wonder if she was worried about being the only one. The fact God is personal is never more clear than in this exchange. He sends the angel to explain to Mary, there is someone who knows what she’s going through. Isn’t this wonderful? God designed us to need each other. In this case, Mary would need support as many would not believe her story. And so the angel explains her own relative, Elizabeth, the barren one is six months along with her own miracle conception. Oh how this warms my heart!

Lord, you are so caring and deeply personal. You could have let Mary go this alone, but you chose to comfort and support her through Elizabeth. Thank you for caring for us too! In Jesus’ name we pray Amen.

Choose to Believe

1058250_cloudy_day_22And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. Luke 1:35 NKJV

Was this answer satisfactory to Mary? Or did it raise more questions in her mind? Did this really explain how it would happen? Well, technically no.

Mary faced a crossroads. Would she continue to question or would she take it in on faith? Mary chose to believe.

Are there things about God you can’t comprehend? That’s where we apply faith and trust God to work it out, just as Mary did.

Lord, thank you for being able to handle our questioning. Thank you for your patience as we decide to have faith and believe you. In Jesus’ precious name we pray Amen.

But How Can This Be?

960692_questionsThen Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” Luke 1:34 NKJV

Mary questions the angel as she can only understand from the human perspective. To make a baby requires a man and woman to have sexual relations. She has not experienced that blessing yet in her life.

I have a friend who always tries to understand everything. Especially regarding the evil people do. She is so pure in heart she has trouble comprehending how people can do such horrible things to others. She needs to understand. It literally compels her. She struggles to understand. Then we talk and I remind her about Proverbs 3:4-5 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” To which she replies, thank you.

Sometimes we, as humans, have a desire to know or understand how this can be. God says trust me. Have faith He is good and His plans are good. That’s all we need to know.

How many times do we question God? Are we looking at things from our limited human view?

Lord, thank you for allowing us to question you. Thank you for helping us with our faith. Thank you for others who encourage us to remember your word. In Jesus’ name Amen.

Mighty Work through Humble People

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” Luke 1:31-33 NKJV

Its one thing to prophecy someone is going to have a baby. Even to guess it will be a boy isn’t very extraordinary. But the angel continues to explain God’s plan for Mary. She will have a son and He will be great. What mother doesn’t want their child to be great! This is where things get exciting.

The angel continues to describe her baby. He will be called the Son of the Highest, as in the Son of God Almighty!?! To ensure Mary understands, the angel goes on. God Himself will give Him the throne of David. This means He will rule over the people – He will be royalty. He will have power and authority. But not only will He reign over the one people, but all people as He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will have no end.

So this child Mary will conceive will be special indeed. He will…

  • Be great.
  • Be called Son of the Highest.
  • Be given the throne of David.
  • Reign over house of Jacob forever.
  • Have no end to His Kingdom.

That’s overwhelming! This is more than warm wishes, happy congratulations on the new addition to your family. This is monumental. This is historical. This has never happened before. God chose Mary to carry His Son!

Lord thank you for choosing the humble to display your mighty work through. Thank you for calling ordinary people into your plans and purposes. In Jesus’ name Amen.
