What do you pray for?
The obvious answer is to pray for each person. Pray for friends and families of each person in your small group as well. Every person has different needs. Don’t forget to pray for the group as a whole. Jesus said, where two or more are gathered together in my name, I am with thee.
What do I pray for?
As a small group leader, your role is to lead your members in study and application of God’s word. The best way to do that is for you to study and apply God’s word in your life. As you do, you will discover many things to pray for your small group. The challenges, temptations, struggles you face may also be faced by members of your group. As you work with them in faith, remember others may need the same covering in prayer.
The bible is our guide. The more we study, the more we learn about God, our self, and prayers. We can get lots of ideas on what to pray from various scriptures. Jesus taught the disciples to pray using what it is known as “The Lord’s Prayer” from Matthew 6:8-10 “For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.”
It wasn’t necessarily the specific words we should use, but rather the attitude and motive behind the words that counts.
Paul was another wonderful example. In every letter he would open with some kind of prayer. Ephesians 1:17-18 says “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened.”
What are my next steps?
(1) Spend some time today reviewing the Word of God.
(2) Make a prayer journal to record the instances of prayer you discover.
(3) Use this prayer journal to help you know what to pray for others.
Father God above, thank you for giving us so many examples of prayer from your Word. Lead us by your Holy Spirit to pray in ways that please you and move mountains with our faith in you. In Jesus’ name we pray Amen.
