Let Every Man Be Swift To Hear

on September 2, 2011

By the word of truth we become first fruits of His creation. Through the word of truth our minds are renewed. The peace of God surrounds our hearts and minds when we think on things that are lovely, true, pure, praiseworthy, honorable and just.

How does this transformation happen?  It is through being swift to hear the Holy Spirit’s quickening God’s desire within us.

Does everyone who physically has ears hear the truth? No. This kind of hearing we are talking about is more than discerning a noise or musical note. From the Greek word akouo as a primary verb it means to hear in various senses, give in the audience of, come to the ears, harken, be noised, and be reported and understood.

Jesus said many times “those who have ears let him hear.” He was saying let them understand.  One can hear the voices of a crowd of people yet recognize no one individually.  But if your lost child were screaming your name from within the crowd, you might hear, recognize your child’s voice and understand he/she is calling. You would search for them until you found them.

This kind of hearing implies understanding. Hear the words. Hear the One speaking the words. Understand what the words mean. Act on the understanding of the words.

James 1:22 says “be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” James 1:25 says “but he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of that work, this one will be blessed in what he does.”

Are you swift to hear?
