Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” John 11:40 NKJV
What is the glory of God Jesus is talking about here? Read John 11:1-44 to understand the full context of this question.
In verse 11 Jesus tells His disciples “Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.” The disciples didn’t get the meaning. In verse 14 Jesus clarified by saying “Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe.”
We start to see the reason Jesus delayed in going to Lazarus: “That you may believe.” Remember, Jesus knows all things. He knows what it will take to get someone to really believe in Him.
Jesus reaches the tomb and Martha confronts Him about not coming sooner. Jesus reassures Martha her brother will rise again (verse 23). For Jesus says in verse 25: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
In verse 42 Jesus goes on to pray out loud to the Father, so that those who hear it may believe that God sent Him. He calls Lazarus to come forth from the tomb and Lazarus walks out!
As I read this story over again, I’m starting to understand the glory of God is about our death and our resurrection. It’s the turning point of when we believe. We put to death our old belief and we’re raised again in new belief. When we believe in Jesus, our old life dies and we become resurrected to a new life in Christ.
In this story, Jesus used the physical death of Lazarus to point out the death and resurrection we experience when we put our trust in Jesus. Every time a person believes in Christ it brings glory to God. The changes we see in a new believer’s life is the evidence of the resurrection that took place when they believed.
Have you experienced death of your old beliefs and the resurrection to new life in Christ? These things were written that you may believe (1 John 5:13).
Lord God above thank you for displaying your glory through the death and resurrection of believers in You. Enable us to share our salvation story with others that they may believe in You too. In Jesus’ name Amen.
